Intimate Wedding at The Fire House KC | Kansas City Wedding Inspiration
How 32 guests, handwritten letters, and a whole lot of joy created one unforgettable Kansas City wedding.

When people imagine a wedding reception, they often picture a packed ballroom, a large wedding party, and a long guest list.
Emily and Mikel's wedding at The Fire House KC looked a little different.
With just 32 of their closest family and friends gathered to celebrate, their day proved something I've seen time and time again as a Kansas City wedding coordinator: The size of your guest list doesn't determine how memorable your wedding will be. From heartfelt private vows to handwritten letters waiting at every seat, every detail reflected what mattered most to them: celebrating intentionally with the people they love.

A Wedding Built Around the People Who Matter Most
One of my favorite things about Emily and Mikel's wedding was a decision they made before the day even arrived. They chose not to have a traditional wedding party. Not because they didn't have people who could have stood beside them. Quite the opposite. Every person they invited was important enough that they wanted them to simply be present, sitting together, witnessing one of the biggest moments of their lives.
It immediately changed the atmosphere of the day. Thirty-two people were present who genuinely loved this couple and couldn't wait to celebrate with them.

Quiet Moments Before the Ceremony
Before Emily saw Mikel, she shared a sweet first look with her dad.
Those few quiet minutes together were filled with excitement, pride, and probably a few emotions neither of them expected.
I always love seeing couples build intentional moments like this into their timeline. Wedding days move quickly, and creating space to slow down before everything begins is something you'll never regret.

Emily and Mikel also chose to share a private first look before the ceremony.
Instead of waiting until the aisle, they exchanged personal vows with no audience, no distractions, and no pressure. Just the two of them. It gave them the opportunity to express things they wanted only each other to hear before celebrating publicly with family and friends.
Planning Inspiration:
Private vows don't replace your ceremony vows. They simply create another meaningful moment where you can be fully present with one another before the excitement of the day begins.
An Intimate Ceremony
With only 32 guests in attendance, every face in the room held significance. You could tell every guest had played a meaningful role in Emily and Mikel's story. Rather than feeling small, the ceremony felt incredibly connected.

Every Guest Was Personally Thanked
One of the details that stood out most wasn't expensive or elaborate.
It was personal. Waiting at each guest's seat was a handwritten letter from Emily and Mikel.
Instead of simply thanking everyone during a toast (which they did), they took the time to write individual notes expressing what each person meant to them. It's one of those thoughtful touches that guests will remember long after the wedding day is over.

A Guest Book They'll Actually Enjoy Looking Through
Rather than signing a traditional guest book, every guest was invited to draw a picture of themselves alongside their signature. Some drawings were surprisingly artistic. Others...well...let's just say they added plenty of laughter. Even the younger guests loved participating by coloring their own pages before dinner.
Years from now, Emily and Mikel won't just see signatures. They'll remember personalities, conversations, and smiles.

Planning Inspiration:
Guest books don't have to be formal. Choosing something interactive gives your guests something fun to do during cocktail hour while creating a keepsake you'll genuinely enjoy looking through.
Proof That You Don't Need 200 Guests to Have a Great Party
If there's one myth this wedding completely disproved, it's that smaller weddings aren't as much fun.
There were only 32 guests. Thirty-two.
People laughed together, talked with one another, and celebrated all evening. There wasn't a moment where the reception felt "too small." Honestly, I think part of that was because everyone there truly knew Emily and Mikel. There wasn't pressure to make conversation with strangers or spend the evening introducing yourself to someone new. Everyone was simply happy to be there celebrating together.
Sometimes smaller really does create something special.

One Last Quiet Moment
The day began with quiet moments.
A first look with Dad.
Private vows.
A ceremony surrounded by the people who mattered most.
So I love that it ended the same way. Before the night was over, Emily and Mikel stepped outside for one final private dance together. After a day spent celebrating with family and friends, they had a chance to simply pause, take it all in, and enjoy being husband and wife. It's one of my favorite ways to end a wedding day.

What We Loved About This Wedding
Emily and Mikel's wedding was a great reminder that a meaningful celebration isn't defined by the size of the guest list. It comes from intentionally choosing what matters most.
Every part of their day reflected that. They shared private vows before the ceremony, wrote handwritten letters to each of their guests, chose favorite foods over traditional wedding fare, and skipped a wedding party because everyone there was equally important to them.
Those decisions didn't make their wedding feel smaller. They made it feel more personal.
As a wedding coordinator, it's always fun to see couples let go of the pressure to do things a certain way and instead create a day that genuinely reflects who they are. That's exactly what Emily and Mikel did, and it was a joy to watch their family and friends celebrate right alongside them.
